  • Rock-Cut Terrace, grecodan wrote 16 years ago:
The stone terraces were probably incorporated into the sacred building itself, giving initiates a place to sit while the rituals were played out within the great hall. See pic for an "insider's" point of view.
  • Lesser Propylaia, grecodan wrote 16 years ago:
The first photo shows the view past the propylaia up the sacred way. The second is a close up of the marble floor where the bronze gates would swing open. The third is a fragment from the propylaia itself, showing symbols of the ancient mysteries: the sheafs of grain, the blossoming flower, and a cylinder or jar representing the earth. Oh dear, now I've gone and given away some of the mysteries. I'm afraid I'm going to have to take away your internet privileges... :)
  • Eleusis Archaeological Museum, grecodan wrote 16 years ago:
The photos show my favorite piece from this museum, a large amphora decorated with scenes from The Odyssey. This side shows Odysseus blinding Polyphemus, the cyclops and son of Poseidon, an act which saves Odysseus and most of his crew, but earns them the wrath of the sea god.
